We are told that this hotel has been acquired by the "small, chic Malmaison chain" and that as a result of this it has been transformed from a "historic and warm" place to somewhere that is now "cool, sleek, and modern". The hotel itself was originally "two classically ornate Italianate warehouses" back in "the mid-1850s", which now converted are said to offer "a kind of cozy sophistication". This place is "decked out in eggplant and black hues" and was once described as resembling "Dracula's living room".
The rooms here "are not huge" but would be perfect for anyone that thinks that "modern is the way to go". These rooms have neutral coloured walls "with black touches". Whilst the beds have "blood-red crushed-velvet covers". These beds are described as being "firm orthopedic beds". The rooms come equipped with items for "your moments of idleness". These include "plasma TVs, DVDs, and free Internet service".
The brasserie and bar here are both also described as being "sleek and modern in design".
This hotel is very highly recommended by Frommers as indicated by the author's two star rating.

Malmaison - a most stylish hotel

The author finds this hotel the ''most stylish hotel'' in Belfast city centre. It's decorated with ''whimsical flora and fauna'' wall paintings and a sense of ''gothic opulence''. One of the suites, ''Samson and Goliath'' as named after ''Belfast's landmark cranes'' (in the Harland & Wolff shipyard where the Titanic ship was built) is ornamented with ''crushed velvet boudoirs'', ''black leather sofas'' and ''roll-top baths''. The author describes the restaurant with ''urban theme'' and ''fabulous canvases'' showcasing the ''city's wall murals''. The restaurant provides a ''goth-chic ambience'' dining with ''flickering tealights'' and ''extensive cocktail menu'', including ''classical films'' featured on ''flat screens''. Finally, the author adores the restaurants finest steaks selected from the Scottish estate, ''Duke of Buccleuch''.

Confirming his initial impression created by the blacks, purples and golds of the public rooms as "cosy gothic" the author found the Malmaison housed within the shell of one of Belfast's "grand old" hotels. The guestrooms are small but the velvets, furnishings and appointments give them "warmth and atmosphere". He particularly liked the "extra-firm" king sized bed and its linens. The "large and intimate" restaurant particularly was noted for its fare. The "sumptuous" bar also served an "extensive" menu. There is plenty of local culture and nightlife in the vicinity.
