Frommers very highly recommend the Malmaison Oxford Castle despite the fact that it was once a prison, it still retains "many aspects of prison life", such as "barred windows", but it is still a "stylish and comfortable" option.

Lets face it, "former inmates never had it so good", according to Frommers, it had floor heated bathrooms, "great beds, mood lighting, power showers, CD players, libraries, satellite TV, and serious wines". This "converted Victorian building" offers rooms (former cells) which are "flank two sides of a large central atrium". This 'three story high" space with its "narrow walkways" reminds films of prisons "in the '30s".

The Malmaison chain specialises in finding "idiosyncratic buildings" to convert into "hip" hotels and their latest opening in Oxford is no exception - it's housed in the old Oxford Prison, an "imposing Victorian" building right next door to Oxford Castle. The rooms are mostly in converted cells that flank the "huge" central atrium, which is a "show-stopping" three storied space. The location is just a 5-minute walk from both the centre and the railway station.
The reviewer's room consisted of two cells, with a third converted for his bathroom. The overall effect was "bigger than it sounds". The room had hints of its past in the high "slot" windows and exposed brickwork, but the "thick" carpet and "comfortable furnishings", including a bed that was "stacked high with cushions", were rather newer additions. Whilst the surroundings were "stylish", he was disappointed by the view of a "litter-strewn yard". He also found the "resolutely dim lighting" was "frustrating" when he couldn't find his key card.
In the bathroom the lighting was again "dim", but there was under-floor heating and a "toasty" heated towel rail. His freestanding bath was "as big as an ark", but flooded in the middle of the night, so the "bathroom was quickly a lake" Staff came to rescue him with an upgrade to a suite. The suite was not as "appealing" as his original room because it wasn't set in converted cells and lacked the "quirky" features of the original room.
Downstairs he found a "smart but unmemorable" bar and a restaurant with "jovial waiters" serving "excellent" food
In conclusion the hotel was "comfortable" and "stylish" and had a "great" location. There were a few service issues (such as no record of his booking when he arrived) and he was overcharged at check out.

Sentenced to Luxury at Malmaison Oxford Castle Hotel

In this review from Fodors, the author gives a brief account of the 125 years when Oxford Castle was used as a prison prior to its "dramatic transformation" into a "plush boutique" hotel. The prison's A-Wing has been kept intact, maintaining the "massive central gallery" and casement windows. Apart from new carpets and safety glass lining the corridors "little has changed" even to the retention of the Victorian iron bound cell doors. The Malmaison decor sets off the stonework of the original building in the public rooms and spaces and afternoon teas are served in the old Visiting Room. She described the staff as "polished". Once inside her "cell" the author mused on "any famous criminals" who might have been previous occupants. Guest rooms were "well appointed" with "plush" furnishings and en suite shower rooms. "English with a Continental twist" meals were "simple and elegant" and served in the underground restaurant. At the time of her visit there was no gym, but there was access to the old exercise yard.

Once she had overcome her uneasiness and the "slightly incongruous" surroundings, the author actually found that Her Majesty's Prison Oxford had undergone a "swanky makeover" to convert it into the Malmaison hotel. She saw reminders of its origins as an eleventh century castle in the "lofty" stonework and "rib-vaulted" ceilings and of its custodial history in the profusion of prison artifacts ("Porridge plays silently in the sitting room"). Even the guest rooms perpetuate this image, labelled Governor's House and A-Wing. She discovered that her room had originally been three cells (even including the old cell door). Decorated in "Malmaison trademark" aubergine, black and maroon, the room and en suite were fully appointed, the bed was comfortable and the furnishings "plush". The "compact" gym was known as The Exercise Yard and in the grounds, which had an "enviable tranquility", is the original castle motte and tower. She notes that a visitor centre is also planned.
