An un-named blogger reports on his stays at the Palace Hotel. He/she has used the hotel "four or five times" in 2005 and despite the problems confesses to being "oddly, rather fond" of the Palace. The building is the "old Refuge Assurance headquarters" and is located on Oxford Road, convenient for the "Oxford Road station" and well placed for the G-Mex centre and the Bridgewater Hall.
The entrance is "magnificent" but only "until you..check in" when "the lottery begins". The person on the desk could be "someone.....around 13..for whom English is ..not their first language" Although the reception desk is "huge", the writer was "amaze(d)" how few staff are on it. These staff are "usually watched by at least two other staff" who are "very busy walking to and fro". Room quality varies. The reviewer comments that the Ambassador grade rooms are "lovely", whilst some rooms "leave a little to be desired". At his last visit the room had net curtains "dark grey with dirt" and wallpaper that was "torn and peeling" (note: photographs of the curtains and peeling paint are provided)

Breakfast was "busy" and he was not offered coffee or toast, and "the juice glasses had run out". On the next day he wanted to order "bacon, waffles and maple syrup", which was on the menu - but there was "no maple syrup" and it took "5 minutes for anyone to confirm". He was "amazed" at "how slowly the staff moved". He proposes that all of this is "very odd" for a "major city centre hotel" and implies that the management has not instilled a sense of the importance of " watching out for the customer" in the staff.

The building is "lovely" and the location is "excellent". The drawback is with "the management of all those assets". He advises anyone planning to stay there to "ask for an Ambassador Room" and make sure to "arrive early for breakfast"
