Barcelo Shrigley Hall as it's now officially known is familiar to most locals by its old name of Pott Shrigley. It's a spectacular country hotel with enormous grounds including an 18 hole international standard golf course. Undoubtedly it's one of the best hotels in the area. If golf's not your thing, there's still plenty of space to explore in the grounds without interfering with the golfers.

Shrigley Hall has a fantastic location near to the edge of the Peak District yet only about 15 miles from central Manchester (and even nearer to the airport). I spent a few days there for a work conference and despite it being many years ago, it was such a beautiful hotel that it remains in my memory.

I was disappointed to be assigned a small room in a newer annexe instead of a room in the main building. My room was of a good standard but nothing special or particularly memorable. No doubt it's been refurbished since I was there so the room details would probably not be valuable any more. The bathrooms were clean and well equipped and my room was comfortable but small with windows that opened and overlooked the gardens.

Car parking is abundant and you are unlikely to struggle for a space. The restaurant is excellent and the staff are attentive without being obsequious. There's a pool and a spa that offers treatment and if you want exercise but don't fancy golf, there's a well-equipped gym.

Whilst I visited for work, I would recommend this as a great hotel for a leisure weekend. It's very popular locally for up-market weddings because the grounds are fabulous and the old building has many great locations for wedding photos. If you can get a good deal, this is a great place for a romantic weekend (but perhaps not so romantic if your husband plays golf).
