This reviewer stayed at the "Beatles-themed" Hotel on the day of the "hotly anticipated" opening. The hotel is so busy with a "continual stream" of arrivals that the writer is concerned about the "permanently smiling doorman" having to constantly open the "huge, incredibly shiny" doors. People are eager to get a look at the "£20m transformation" of this "imposing marble columned" building into a homage to "arguably the greatest band of all time".

It took nine years for the project to be realised, but in a "rather neat" twist, the hotel opened the year Liverpool became European Capital of Culture 2008. With "phenomenal" interest in the hotel, advance bookings are at a "high level".

Edging its bets, the hotel tries to appeal to "Beatles diehards" without alienating others, so the Beatles theme has been kept "subtle". "Previously unseen" photos and original paintings of the band are found throughout the hotel, making it "as much of a destination" as a hotel, whilst the Beatles hits in the background give customers a "feel-good factor".

Situated in "the old merchant district" of Liverpool, Hard Days Night is "right next" to the Cavern Club.

The writer's "deluxe double" was not overlooking the street, and so was quiet, with an "extremely comfortable" bed, equipped with a "fun" control panel to operate the lights and furnished in a "modern and stylish" style.

Blakes, the restaurant, is themed around the Sgt Pepper's album and serves "competently cooked" food.

Of the two bars,Bar Four, could well be "one of the coolest places to hang out" in the city, and serves "surprisingly tasty" Beatles themed cocktails.

The writer notes that the staff is "clearly well-trained" and handled the busy situation admirably.

Liverpool's Beatles hotel should stick to the music

The location of the hotel is in a "magnificent" listed buildings near to the famous Cavern Club. It is the "icing on the cake" of an "entire block" devoted to the Beatles. The Beatles theme is everywhere. Statues of them are near the "cathedral-like" main door, "sheets of Beatles' music hang from the ceiling" of the brasserie and a "frieze of black and white stills" decorates the entrance wall. The "lobby's star feature" is a rare Yellow Submarine jukebox, and Beatles music plays "night and day". Beatles films are piped directly to TVs in the rooms. The artwork decorating the hotel also has Beatles' links, although the reviewer is not convinced of its quality.

The restaurant "looks a promising space" with a "dark wood interior", "vast windows" and "giant white lampshades". The menu is "modern British" using "local, seasonal food".

The reviewer likes the restored "sweeping ornate staircase" with its "polished marble pillars" and a half-moon glass lift still in its "original shaft". He is less keen on the "token Buddha-themed bar" with its "hideously expensive" wallpaper and the conference room which is "at a dead end". The wedding chapel is "claustrophobic" and the Wall of Fame "a nice idea poorly executed". The staff, however, seem "young, smart" and the concierges are "brimming with useful local knowledge".
