The corridors of the hotel are very impressive with statues and paintings abound. On entering the room we were quite happy in what we saw but on closer inspection we were not too happy. Nothing major but as we were staying five nights we were not too happy. Lovely newish bathroom apart from the shower which was in the bath with a shower curtain the shower head had seen far better days as had the bath, it was diffecult getting any wateron ones body, surely not a premier four star! No working extraction in the bathroom (reception said this was because it was an old building...come on!)

When asked for a iron and board the first did not work, the second had no thermastat (told by reception that this should not matter) The third iron/board took over half an hour to arrive. I would have thought a premier four star should have had an iron/board in the room. About an hour wasted.

We asked for a move which we got the next day to the Kings part of the hotel, the new part. New yes, modern yes, but nothing special. The corridors reminded me of Premier Inn, which isnt bad but this is a four star.

Food in the restaurant very good, service very good. Food in the bar......well about £14.00 for an ok Beefburger/chips etc very expensive. Staff seemed short in the Waiting Room bar which led to messy tables, glasses piling up on the bar something which I am not used to in a four star. Breakfast was fair.

All in all we did enjoy our time at the Queen but it is a little rough around the edges, something just lacking in some way.

One such hotel that still tries to maintain the old air of grandeur is the Queens in Chester. It stands directly opposite the railway station and still has a liveried doorman standing outside to open the door and pass the time of day with passers by. Once you're inside it's not the most stylish of places, with rather too much chintzy fabric and flowery carpets but what it lacks in modernity, it makes up for in its sense of style.

Despite being right next to the station, that doesn't put the hotel in the city centre. It's about a mile and a half walk from here to the Cathedral and the historic centre. So keep that in mind if you want to be right at the heart of things.

It's graded as a four star so that means trouser press, tea and coffee tray, good sized room, hairdryer, desk, and a good standard of décor. It's been refurbished since I was last there so more detail would probably not be helpful.

Highlights? The restaurant is very good and there's a small terrace that's very pleasant when the weather is good. And watch out for the bears; you might find you're not sleeping alone!
