The grounds on which the Cathedral stands also house a partially ruined abbey, a small cemetary and some houses and the complex looks like a small old fashioned village in the countryside and really is lovely.

The Cathedral itself is a stunning piece of architeqture and has been standing for 900 years so it has plenty of fascinating history some of which you can find out about on your visit.
It is free to enter and look around but it does rely on donations to keep it running so they have a donation box by the door where you can drop some coins to help with the maintenance.

Although I am not religious I enjoy visiting the Cathedral as I enjoy the history and it just has a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to find in a lot of other similair buildings.
You can get some literature which is by the front entrance which explains where the most important features and give you a brief run down of their history. This is well worth having as although it is pleasurable just to look around it is nice to be able to have a little more insight into such an interesting building.

The stain glass is beautiful and the east window dates from the 1300's. This along with the decoration of the ceiling and the paintings of the saints and apostles which date from the 1400's are particularaly worth looking at.
There is a small museum located underneath the building in the treasury and whilst it is small it is worth your time having a look. There is a small charge to enter the museum and you pay by way of an honesty box which is a nice touch in todays age of distrust.

Once you have looked around the Cathedral you can have a look around the grounds which are beautiful and the people living in the houses here are very lucky to live somewhere so beautiful in the middle of the city.
There is the priors cafe on the grounds which is well worth a visit and if it is a nice day you can sit outside and soak up some more of the atmosphere.

Carlisle Cathedral is well worth a visit if you are in the area as it is stunning and the history of the area is so unique given it's location on the border of Enland and Scotland.
