On entering the hotel, Hilton's "flagship" property is "conspicuously businesslike" although there are "softening touches" in the shape of floral displays and "warm-coloured carpet". The hotel was opened in 1963 as Hilton's first London hotel and has been kept up to date with "rolling refurbishment programmes". The hotel has 453 rooms on 25 floors and they are all being gradually "updated" with floors 5-8 completed in 2006 and six more to be done in 2007.
Many new visitors ask for "park view" rooms but the writer recomments that the "city" views are "fabulous" at night. Standard, deluxe and executive rooms are all the same size at "22sqm" and have all the usual features you'd expect but there is "no wifi access" in the guestrooms and ironing boards and tea and coffee making facilities have only recently been introduced. The older rooms are "colourful" and feel "dated" compared to the "minimalist" newer rooms. The reviewer recommends the upgrade from deluxe to executive at £40 extra because the extra facilities (lounge with "free drinks, continental breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks and canapes" ) represent good value if you use them fully.
The "revamped" restaurant called Galvin at Windows has "1930s-style decor", "modern French food" and views that are "wonderful". Trader Vics offers a "more casual alternative" with "French Polynesian" food. The champagne bar called "POP" is a "small trendy" bar with a "fine line in bubbles".
For business users there is a grand ballroom and eight meeting rooms which are "equipped with wifi access" as well as a business centre with both wifi and "wired" internet access.
The gym is in the basement and includes "wheelchair access" equipment and sauna and steam room facilities.
In places the hotel is "showing (her) age" but continual investment is doing a good job of keeping things "fresh"
