The AA inspector informs us that the De Vere University Arms boasts "an enviable position" as it is located right "in the very heart of the city" and overlooks Parkers Piece.

There is "an elegant domed lounge" and a "smart restaurant" and the hotel also offers "extensive" facilities for conferences and banqueting.

Gorgeous Building but a bit shabby

The University Arms in Cambridge thinks of itself as one of the city's finest heritage hotels and does have one of the finest locations in the city. It over-looks the large park that's known as Parker's Piece. This is where you'll find lots of sports pitches and plenty of people walking their dogs or taking a stroll. It's right in the heart of the city, close to the shops, restaurants, pubs and colleges. You couldn't really find a better site. I was excited to stay there a few years ago when I had clients visiting from Bulgaria and the company I worked for wanted to impress them with a historic hotel. Otherwise I doubt I'd have got approval for such an expensive hotel.

The building is a gorgeous old Victorian giant filled with original features and many of the rooms are one-offs. My favourite room is the restaurant where breakfast is served overlooking the playing fields. The bar is grand and has the air of a gentlemen's club with ridiculous checked carpeting and lots of leather chairs. My room was of a good size but the décor was dated and a bit shabby in places although the quality of the sheets meant I could turn a blind eye to some of this. It's important to make it clear when you book that you want one of the rooms in the older part of the hotel because the newer rooms are really dull and it's a shame to pay for history and get a bland characterless room.

Parking in Cambridge is always a problem and if you want a space at the University Arms, be sure to book ahead. Parking is charged at a daily rate or about £15 a night so it's worth keeping that in mind when you book. Cambridge is a fantastic city but this hotel seems to be resting on its historic laurels and needs to try a bit harder.

The author tells us that this hotel dates from 1834 and "maintains much of its antique charm." He also points out that there are still "original architectural features despite modernization over the years." The location is said to be "near the city center and the university" The bedrooms are described as "suitable" ranging from "small to midsize." It is noted that "many of the bedrooms have recently been refurbished" and some have "four-poster beds." Whilst the premium rooms have "slippers and robes."
