Ideal if visiting the President

The reviewer makes several initial points about the hotel. Firstly, it is ideally located "in the very grandest part of town". Secondly it is a "treasure house" of art pieces, including items from the Louvre. And thirdly it has had a wide range of famous guests.

So he was expecting it to be of "unsurpassed (but discreet) elegance" and was not disappointed by the "atmosphere" in the "spacious" lobby or the "beautiful" lift. His room had a "proper hallway", an "abundance" of hanging space and lighting and Louis XVI style furniture. He approved of the "controllable" air conditioning and the "generous size" bathroom with its "good capacity" tub. His accommodation was therefore "quiet, spacious and comfortable".

He took afternoon tea, "a small masterpiece", served by a "charming" waiter, and consisting of sandwiches and cakes "of superb quality". This was a prelude to dinner in a restaurant "recognised as one of the very finest" in Paris. The dining room itself was "ravishing and sumptuous" adorned with crystal, oak panelling and works of art. This, together with service "of the highest order" made him feel "thoroughly pampered and at ease". Not even the presence of a famous film star disturbed the "happy contentment".

He describes his meal in detail, with comments ranging from "delicate, intricate and beautifully made" to "super" and "utterly delicious". He acknowledges that it is not cheap, but considers it good value for the "very finest ingredients" which are "prepared by a famous chef" and served with top class porcelain, glass and cutlery. The wine list had "hundreds" of bottles which "make the French most proud". Breakfast was equally good, "of the highest quality".

He sums up Le Bristol as "warm, welcoming, immaculately turned out and deliciously glamorous".

The author states in his review that the Bristol is one of the "most exclusive hotels" in Paris. We are told that the "spacious and elegant rooms " either sport a decor of "authentic Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture" or a 19th-century style that is "more relaxed ". In the public spaces you can expect to find "sumptuous carpets and tapestries" while the brasserie serves "gourmet" cuisine surrounded by "contemporary floral decor" and the huge restaurant and bar attracts the "posh and wealthy". The author was also impressed by the hotel's "luxury shopping street" but didn't like that the nearest metro station is "a few blocks" away and thinks some guests might not like the "old-fashioned atmosphere"

Luxury, Michelin stars and chintz

"A five-star property of gold-plated reputation" sums up this hotel which maintains an aristocratic aloofness and has welcomed the rich and famous for over a century. Situated on the "gilded" Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré its "chicness" is a given.

The "wide expanses" of the lobby reflect the Roaring Twenties, as do the "polished wood and glass" of the former theatre, now the winter restaurant. The garden, a "haven of swaying trees and al fresco tables" is still "ideal for idle chatter". The summer restaurant has three Michelin stars and so "projects an air of sophistication" in its "calm interior" as it pursues "perfection". The author ate in the "other" restaurant where he declares the food "succulent" and the wine choice "interesting" and "reasonable value".

The author's room was in the old part, recently refurbished, and had "soft carpets" and a "vast and comfy" bed. "Large" windows "flood" the room with light and the bathroom had "cool and pale" marble fittings.

Yet it feels as if the hotel is "struggling to stay close to the times". The décor has a "hint of chintz", the spa is a "thin channel of space" and the pool, although with a "glorious" view, is "boxy and small". Given the prices he feels "entitled to ask for more". He gives it 3/5.

Darwin Porter describes the Bristol as a "palace" located near to the Palais d'Elysée and on the "shopping street parallel to the Champs-Elysées". The author rates the hotel in third place behind the Ritz and the Plaza Athénée in "terms of style and glamour".
The hotel possess an "18th-century Parisian facade" that incorporates a "glass-and-wrought-iron entryway".
Guests will be greeted at the entrance by "uniformed English-speaking attendants" and will be provided with a personalized "rigidly maintained" service that is "old-world".
The guest rooms are described as "opulent" and supplied with "antiques or well-made reproductions". They are adorned with "inlaid wood, bronze, crystal, Oriental carpets, and original oil paintings".
Each room comes with a "luxurious bathroom with tub/shower combinations".

The hotel, which the author acknowledges as "one of the world's finest", offers the visitor an ambience of "authentic Parisien elan". The guests of the hotel are described as a "prestigious clientele" who enjoy "an elegant setting" that is "enhanced with genuine period furnishings".
Rooms are described as comfortable, whereas the suites are "lavish".
The bedrooms of the Le Bristol are decorated individually and they "showcase a refined ambience" in the writers opinion. "Pleasures" of its own are offered by each of the suites, which could mean a private terrace or, in one of the Presidential Suites, a Turkish bath.
The restaurant of the hotel, which is also called Le Bristol, is described as being "sophisticated". For winter it offers a "romantic, oak-paneled " venue and for the summer months a "lovely" dining room that opens onto a formal French garden.
Guests can expect to be met by staff that are "cordial and impressively trained".
Le Bristol, which is "steeped in tradition", will offer its guests "cutting edge moments" which could consist of allowing them to use "eco-friendly Smart cars for shopping excursions " or a fashion show in the "stylish bar" by "renowned houses such as Versace or Givenchy".
The writer also mentions that the hotel offers a business center for its clientele, as well as a florist and a hair salon. The Gayot rating of 5 keys indicate that it is "one of the best hotels in the World".
