Gayot rate this hotel to be 'among the very best hotels in the world' and the author states that it offers 'old money, charm and discreet attention to detail'. Situated on the 'ritziest shopping street'' in the world it is close to 'boutiques and galleries'. The writer notes, that it has a 'comfortable air' and features a 'graceful fireplace', 'Aubusson carpets and Gobelins tapestries'. The guestrooms have been 'designed by Mark Hampton' and guests can expect to find ''antiques, fine fabrics and Piranesi architectural drawings' in their unique and 'luxurious' rooms. Modern amenities include 'multiple-line speaker phones, VCR, CD players and whirlpool tubs'. The hotel also features a 'state-of-the-art fitness center'.
The ambience in the restaurant Carlyle, which offers 'French, Greek and American-influenced cuisine', reminded the writer of an 'English manor house', whereas The Gallery is a 'tribute to the sultans dining room at the Topkapi Palace'.
According to the author, Woody Allen can be heard playing 'jazz' with a 'local band' at the 'famed' Cafe Carlysle and the Bemelmans Bar offers a 'cocktail list' that seems to come straight from the 'early 20th century'.

Frommers have rated "the grand dame" in Madison Avenue as exceptional. The hotel is situated in a "34-story tower" in one of New Yorks traditional and "moneyed neighborhoods". Guests can expect to be greeted by a "doorman" wearing a bowler hat and "service is white-glove". The author describes the design of the rooms as "English manor" and "luxurious but not excessive" and "elegant". They come in various sizes and while "only some" offer terraces" many have "breathtaking views". All rooms offer "marble bathrooms" and, as the author states, a "all the amenities you'd expect".
The lobby is newly renovated and features "Piranesi prints", "murals" and "Baccarat light fixtures".
Guests include "many celebrities and dignitaries". The restaurant of the hotel has been rated as "first class" and offers "excellent" French cuisine. For entertainment the Cafe Carlisle offers "first rate cabaret" and the Bemelmans Bar is not only a "wonderful spot for cocktails" but also offers "live soft jazz".
