[more]The Venetian Palace in Famagusta originally dates back to the Lusignan reign of the island, when it was used as a royal palace.
From 1489 onwards it became the residence of the Venetian governors and was refurbished extensively during the 16th century. Many of the originally Gothic features were removed during this period and replaced by Italian renaissance style features and when the Venetians government came to an end after the Ottoman invasion much of the interior of the palace was destroyed and what is remaining today is more or less only its outer shell.
The outer walls of the palace, part of which have been erected with the usage of stones from the ancient town Salamis, are regarded as a fine example of 16th century Venetian architecture on the island.
