The church dates back to the late 13th century, was part of a Franciscan monastery and is one of the oldest still existing Latin ecclesiastical buildings in the city. The Franciscans were the founders of one of the most important and oldest religious orders in Cyprus and had already established themselves in the capital Nicosia as early as 1230 AD. During the 5th crusade (1217-1221) St Francis visited the island while he was on his way to the Holy Land.
The church, which is heavily ruined, features a three-sided apse and was extended later on with several small chapels on it's north and south sides.
