[more]The Aga Cafer Pasa Fountain is located on the Northern corner of Namik Kemal Square, next to the Venetian Palace and directly in the heart of Famagusta's Old Town.
The fountain was named after the Ottoman general Aga Cafer Pasha who was a well known 16th / 17th-century governor and was commissioned to improve the infrastructure of the city (mainly it's water supply) after the Ottoman conquest of the island.
The fountain is one of the best preserved examples of the many Ottoman fountains that could once be found within the walled city and is believed to have been built in 1597. The marble tub of the fountain is a recycled Roman sarcophagus that was moved to the city by the Venetians and probably had its origins in Paphos.
