Dar 91 is a private and self-contained house with its own roof terraces in the picturesque, walled old town of Essaouira.
Tucked away in a district of the medina relatively untouched by tourism, the house is a ‘home from home’, which we let out as a whole, rather than ‘by the room’.
Here you can sit back and watch everyday Moroccan life unfold: children playing and collecting water from the communal well; women scurrying back and forth from the public oven; men spinning yarn, chatting on street corners or heading back from a fishing expedition.
Overhead the seagulls cry and in the distance the slow march of time is captured by the muezzin’s 'calls to prayer'...
Dar 91 is light, airy and comfortable. It occupies the front half of what was once a police watchtower. The décor fuses old and new Moroccan and European styles, but without being slavish to any particular ‘look’ or period.
The main bedroom and its bathroom are on the first floor; the living room, kitchen and dining area occupy the second; and a further bedroom and bathroom make up the third floor – which also has a small terrace. From here, wooden stairs lead up to a large terrace with uninterrupted views across the medina and to the sea.
Restored by local craftsmen, the 19th century house now features beautiful, reclaimed Moroccan doors, floor tiles and furniture, along with an eclectic mix of local and European fixtures, soft furnishings and accessories.
Unlike many Moroccan properties let out to tourists, Dar 91 does not feature a central courtyard - which can be a big advantage if you value your privacy, as you won't be sharing the house or roof terraces with other guests.
Dar 91 is situated in the Chbanat district, near the Bab Doukkala - a part of town famous for its textile workshops, where weavers spin their yarn and produce beautiful cloth on hand looms, set back from the street in tiny workshops.
Bakeries, grocery shops and barrows laden with seasonal fruit are on your doorstep. Essaouira’s main souks are less than five minutes away; cafes, restaurants, the beach and harbour are within an easy stroll.
Before your stay we will happily arrange taxi transfers to and from the airport (we take no commission for this) and can help you sort out practical issues, for example around public transport, swimming pools and car / cycle / windsurfing hire. We also offer more general advice about holidaying in Morocco.
At Dar 91 we take pride in helping you ‘get away from it all’ and immerse yourself in a different culture. So you’ll find no phone / internet, DVD, TV or computer games in the house. There are some board games, a growing library of books and our one concession to over-connectedness…an i-Pod / MP3 dock with speakers. Beyond that, it’s just you, the house and the world beyond the front door!
We give 10% of our profits to local good causes, focusing on education and micro-loans. Please contact us for more information on past and current projects.
We email all our guests a practical guide to staying in Dar 91, including helpful information about Essaouira, for example advice on local customs and details of restaurants we like.
