Graves Art Gallery - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Graves Art Gallery (20.07.2007 21:51)
The Graves Art Gallery is one of several galleries in Sheffield that is owned by the City Council and because of this access is and always has been free. It is located right in the heart of Sheffield City Centre, above the City's library on the third floor, just around the corner from one of the City's other galleries, the Millennium Galleries. Together these two galleries now form a part of the [more...] -
Beauchief Abbey - Sheffield, United Kingdom
Beauchief Abbey (20.07.2007 20:20)
Beauchief Abbey lies 5 miles (8 kilometres) to the south of Sheffield City Centre, on a north-facing hillside. Mature woodland and two large golf courses surround it, and although only the remains of the Abbey exist today it is well worth a visit here just for the beauty and tranquillity of its setting. Robert FitzRanulf de Alfreton founded Beauchief (pronounced bee-chiff) Abbey in either 1176 [more...] -
Kelham Island Museum - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Kelham Island Museum (20.07.2007 14:15)
The Kelham Island museum in Sheffield opened in 1982. I remember first visiting this place when I was at school when I guess I was about 12 or 13 years old, which would have made it around this date, although at the time I never realised that it was newly opened. The objective behind this museum was to provide a home and a permanent display for all of the articles, objects and pictures which [more...] -
City Hall - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Sheffield City Hall (20.07.2007 13:41)
Sheffield has some amazing architecture and magnificent Victorian buildings and the City Hall which dominates the centre of the city is one of the grandest buildings of them all, yet surprisingly this building is not Victorian at all, but instead it is actually late Edwardian. The first stones, which came from the local Darley Dale quarry in Derbyshire, were not laid until the very end of the [more...] -
Don Valley Stadium - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Don Valley Stadium (17.07.2007 20:18)
The Don Valley Stadium is a large leisure complex that is located 2 miles (3 kilometres) east of Sheffield City Centre. It opened in 1990 in time for the World Student Games, which took place in the City the following year. Since this time it has become a popular venue for sporting events, music concerts and exhibitions. It is also now well and truly established as a landmark in the City. The [more...] -
Roche Abbey - Maltby, United Kingdom
Roche Abbey (17.07.2007 09:13)
Roche Abbey lies approximately 13 miles (21 kilometres) to the east of Sheffield and 9 miles (14.5 kilometres) to the west of Doncaster in Maltby Beck, in South Yorkshire. Although the Abbey is now in ruins it is a place that is well worth a visit if you are ever in the area, and though it was one of lesser known Cistercian Abbeys of its era it is nonetheless a very typical example of a 12th [more...] -
Haddon Hall - Bakewell, United Kingdom
Haddon Hall (16.07.2007 19:35)
Haddon Hall is an imposing English Country House situated near Bakewell, in the heart of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. It is probably the finest example of a fortified medieval manor house in existence, yet unlike the majority of similar houses this is not in the hands of the National Trust, but instead it is still owned and lived in by the same family that has owned it since [more...] -

The Rother Valley Country Park lies on the South Yorkshire and Derbyshire border between Sheffield and Rotherham. It covers an area of 740 acres which consists of lakes, woodlands and open spaces. The idea behind RVCP dates back to the 1960's and in 1972 a full feasibility study was undertaken during which the National Coal Board's plans for open cast mining in this area was discussed. Castle Inn - Castleton, United Kingdom - June, 2007
The Castle Inn (13.07.2007 19:04)
The Castle Inn is one of several public houses that can be found in the Derbyshire town of Castleton in the Peak District National Park. It is located right in the heart of the town, at the bottom of the hillside where Peveril Castle is perched, overlooking Castleton. This location leaves the visitor in no doubt how this place derived its name and the sign outside here has a picture of a Castle [more...] -
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet - Sheffield, United Kingdom
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet (12.07.2007 21:58)
The Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is one of only two Grade 1 Listed Buildings in Sheffield and it has also been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Originally called the Abbeydale Works this is a unique Industrial site that dates from at least 1714. Many of the things here are still operated by original water wheels on the River Sheaf, that flows through the site, and all of the [more...]
