Compiled for you: The facts!Details Elsecar Reservoir

Description: Elsecar Reservoir is a 12 acre reservoir located about 12 kilometres to the south of Barnsley. Originally built during the 19th century as a holding reservoir to service the Dearne and Dove Canal Elsecar Reservoir is now a local nature reserve and a popular spot for walkers and anglers.

In 1910 a series of photographs were published showing locals sunbathing on the reservoir's beach under the caption "Elsecar by the sea". The name stuck and Elsecar Reservoir became a unlikely inland tourist destination for day trippers from Barnsley, Sheffield and the surrounding area.
