The Holiday Inn at Ellesmere Port is a lovely hotel in a (mostly) lousy location. The company I work for uses it as a back-up hotel when those nearer to the office are already full but increasingly people who’ve got any transport, prefer to go to the HI because it’s nicer than the local places. Most people who stay here will probably be visiting one of the industrial sites in the area such as the Stanlow oil refinery or the businesses on the Wirral. It’s not really a tourist destination although the hotel stands very close to the Ellesmere Port canal museum and a short distance from the Cheshire Oaks shopping centre. If you want a cheap alternative to staying in Chester, and have your own transport, that might also be an option.
Parking is tricky because the space directly around the hotel is limited because it stands on a spit of land surrounded by water. I had to park on the other side of the narrow bridge so we unloaded the car and I went off to park leaving my colleagues to start checking in. It was raining, which isn’t unusual, but the zone for setting down passengers is covered with a large awning so they didn’t get wet but of course I did, dragging my way over from the parking place.
I don’t think it’s been open for very long because everything is pristine and still looks new. The public areas are all well furnished, spacious and welcoming. The receptionists are friendly and efficient and it’s a nice bright light-flooded building. Through the back of the building is the restaurant and it has long windows that overlook the canal basin where the boats are moored. It’s really very attractive. There’s also a pleasant public seating area with plenty of space and clusters of chairs and coffee tables. If you don’t fancy a full sit-down meal, bar snacks and lighter meals can also be served.
The hotel has a pool and a gym which is well equipped. There are meeting rooms available for hire and good conference support staff.
The rooms are modern and well-equipped with wooden laminate flooring, large comfortable beds and modern television sets with plenty of channels. The desks are well set up for working with plenty of sockets and wifi is available. Bathrooms are neat and clean and have a bath with shower over, hairdryer, basic toiletries and plenty of towels.
If the location works for you and you don’t mind a nice hotel in an ugly area, this is a good choice.
