A jem in the wilderness

, 20/12/2007] We visited El Jem as part of a coach tour to different attractions around Tunisia. For me this had to be the highlight of the tour. El Jem is a Roman amphitheatre which is in better condition than the one in Rome and almost as big. The Colosseum was thought to hold up to 30000 - 45000 people at any on time. On the road towards El Jem the amphitheatre can be seen from a distance and the closer you get the more impressive it gets. According to Daniel Jacobs, writing for the Rough Guide to Tunisia, the amphitheatre at El Jem is "the single most impressive Roman monument in Africa" and this impression is reinforced on approach by its "sudden appearance" on the Sahel landscape, giving an impression of "sheer incongruity". It is one of the "best preserved" of its type and "finer than the Colosseum in Rome", as it was built towards the end of the Roman Empire.
