St Mary's Church in Edwinstowe stands on the edge of Sherwood and according to legend this is place where the outlaw Robin Hood married his sweetheart, Maid Marion. Notable features within the church include its six bells that date from between 1662 and 1889. The tower dates from around 1400 and stands 46 metres high. In 1672 this tower was struck by lightening and badly damaged resulting in the villagers sending a petition to King Charles 11 seeking his permission to allow them to sell timber from his Royal forest to raise funds to repair this tower, this permission was granted. |
