The castle was "used as a defence" in the 6th century and its walls were proved inaccessible in the 18th century. Used "over the centuries" "by countless armies", to travel from Scotland to England. This rocky volcanic hill "was the most easily defended hilltop" along this major road. Nowadays "competing tour groups" are the only hostilities at the castle.

The lonely planet guide says that the "castle looked much as it does today" since the 18th century. Thanks to Sir Walter Scott it is today an important Scottish "symbol".
Within the walls of Edinburgh castle you can see the changing of the guard, Mills Mount Battery, St Margaret's Chapel which is Edinburgh "oldest" building, "the Palace" and "the Scottish United Services Museum".
