[04/10/2009] This is a real "designer" hotel, part of the Italian Missoni fashion label and its first to open. The "modernist-looking building" is in a prestigious location, just off the Royal Mile and the "upbeat quirkiness" is in sharp contrast to Edinburgh's "gloomy architecture and weather".
Striking design is a feature of the hotel. Mainly black and white with "bursts of bright colour" it won't appeal to everyone but the reviewer found it "fun".
Rooms are decorated in olive brown or indigo with "zig-zag patterned linen". Bathrooms are in "deep aubergine". All the rooms are a "decent" size with good interesting fittings and some with "dramatic" views. Bathrooms are equipped with "vast heated mirrors" and are big enough for "walk-in showers". The reviewer's only complaint was the "spartan" mini-bar.
The hotel’s Italian restaurant, Cucina, serves "good, seasonal" food, complemented by a "great" wine list. Staff are "uniformly charming" and "helpful". Again the designer touch is evident in the "psychedelic-patterned" table settings. The bar is "casually cool", one of the city's "chicest" spots and makes up for the lack of a "decent" lounge.
Its location near the Royal Mile makes it ideally placed for everything the city has to offer, and it is a "short walk" from the main line rail station and airport bus terminal.
