Compiled for you: The facts!Details Temple of Horus

Description: This temple is the second largest in Egypt after Karnak, and the best preserved. Dedicated to Horus, the Egyptian god with the head of a falcon, it was begun in 237 BC and completed in 57 BC. Its construction covered the reigns of six Ptolemies, and was the last of a series of temples on the site, chosen because it was the location of a battle between arch enemies Horus and Seth. Constructed of great sandstone blocks, the huge structure has traditional monumental gates, or “pylons”, 118 feet high. Beyond that is a colonnaded courtyard and beyond that the Great Hall. Also to be seen are the inner sanctuary, the Nile chamber where the priests obtained holy water and rooms for the treasures and tools of the temple. There are many reliefs, some still with colour, depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology, and inscriptions written by priests to preserve the knowledge of the temple rituals. After the old Egyptian religions were taken over by Christianity, then Islam, the temple fell into disuse. Some of the decoration was defaced and houses were built on and around it. It was uncovered in the 1860s. Edfu is on the west bank of the Nile about 60 km north of Aswan.
