Win Hill - Bamford, United Kingdom
Win Hill in the Peak District National Park (17.07.2008 19:35)
At 432 metres above sea level this is one of the highest peaks in the region. [more...] -
Lincoln Cathedral - Lincoln, United Kingdom
Lincoln's magnicent Cathedral (29.01.2008 22:34)
No visitor to Lincoln can fail to see its Cathedral, which along with Lincoln Castle dominates the town and both of these impressive landmarks can be seen from many miles around. Construction of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, to give it its full title, began in 1092 although it was not until 1311 that it was completed. At that time it was not only the tallest [more...] -
Caudwell's Mill and Craft Centre - Matlock, United Kingdom
Caudwell's Mill and Craft Centre (29.01.2008 18:58)
Located just off the busy A6 trunk road at Rowsley near Matlock in the heart of the Peak District National Park is where Caudwell's Mill and Craft Shop is to be found. I would describe this as one of those little gems that I occasionally stumble upon whilst out walking in the Derbyshire's countryside. Despite its location on a busy road it is set back from the main road and could quite easily be [more...] -
Chestnut Centre - Chapel-en-le-Frith, United Kingdom
Otters and owls galore in the Peak District National Park (14.01.2008 23:03)
The Chestnut Centre is a wildlife sanctuary located in Derbyshire near Chapel en le Frith. I had seen the signs to this attraction many times on my regular visits to Castleton and I decided to pay it a visit one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. The Chestnut Centre opened in 1984 and covers 50 acres of open land. Within this there are various woodland trails. As you follow the sign posted [more...] -
Thornbridge Hall - Ashford-in-the-Water, United Kingdom
Thornbridge Hall (08.12.2007 11:18)
Thornbridge Hall is a large stately home in Derbyshire. It dates from the 11th century but in more recent years was purchased by Sheffield City Council in 1945 who continued to own it until 1997. During its ownership by Sheffield City Council it was used for educational purposes and I spent a weekend here when I was thirteen years old. A trip to Thornbridge Hall was something that was offered [more...] -
Church of St Lawrence - Eyam, United Kingdom
Church of St Lawrence, Eyam (07.12.2007 12:42)
The small Derbyshire village of Eyam is most famous for its association with the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The plague was brought here from London in 1666 via infected cloth and within just a few weeks over half of the population of Eyam had died. Many people are drawn here by this moving story and those that know the story well will know that that the Church of St Lawrence that stands [more...] -
Ye Royal Oak - Chesterfield, United Kingdom
Ye Royal Oak (27.09.2007 22:36)
Chesterfield is a very historic town and everywhere that you look there are black and white timber framed medieval buildings. One of the most historic parts of the town centre is an area called the Shambles. This part of town is characterised by narrow cobbled streets and right in the heart of these tiny lanes is where Chesterfield's oldest public house, Ye Royal Oak can be found. Even from [more...] -
Stanage Edge - Hathersage, United Kingdom
Stanage Edge in the Peak District National Park (24.09.2007 22:22)
Stanage Edge is the name given to the largest of the Peak District's gritstone edges, it is also visually, the most impressive and has become a magnet for rock climbers who come here from all over the country to climb its sheer vertical rock faces. Stanage Edge is only a few miles from where I live so this is a place that I am very familiar with. It is a place that I visit often at the [more...] -
Bolsover Castle - Bolsover, United Kingdom
Bolsover Castle (20.09.2007 20:27)
Following the triumphs of William the Conqueror during his famous battle of 1066 the newly appointed King William set about rewarding those loyal men who had fought for his cause and several different Castles were built and given away as gifts. The Peveril family was one of the greatest beneficiaries for their support and all across Northern England there are examples of Castles connected to this [more...] -
St Peter's Church - Edensor, United Kingdom
St Peter's Church (14.09.2007 19:03)
Edensor is one of the prettiest little villages that I have discovered. It lies adjacent to the vast Chatsworth Estate in the heart of Derbyshire's Peak District National Park. This whole village, which is pronounced "Ensor" was relocated a couple of hundred years ago, to its present site, from a few hundred metres further down the road. This was because the then Duke of Devonshire (from [more...]
