The walk goes coast to coast, passing castles, lochs, over hills, and goes through some historic and popular towns, such as Moffat, Wanlockhead and St John's Town of Dalry.
The entire walk will take approximately 10 to 14 days to complete, although inexperienced walkers may take longer and inclement weather, such as snow or high winds, will slow your journey. Accommodation is available throughout the walk and, under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, wild camping is permitted almost anywhere along the way. Six bothies are also available at various locations which provide free accommodation.
