Gallagher's Boxty House is situated in the heart of Temple Bar, and close to the Ha'penny Bridge. The food is traditional Irish, with an emphasis on stews, soups and inevitably the Irish Boxty or potato pancake which is cooked on a griddle and filled with various fillings.

The Boxty House is just a restaurant however, and it is not a place where you would go just for a drink, and so we elected to try it during a lunch time.

Although the marketing focus is on 'traditional Irish' the restaurant has become something of a local attraction. It has received plenty of positive press and frequented by many stars. It tends to be a place that tourists will dine in and not necessarily locals, although I am sure that a few do enter its doors.

The restaurant is not huge, and has a warm cosy feel too it. It is rather like dining in a big old kitchen, with its fireplaces, oak fittings and unfitted look The tables are shared, mainly in groups of six or eight, so this is a great place to come for the craic, but perhaps not so if you want an intimate meal with your Valentine. When we entered the restaurant we were advised that tables were shared, however they respected the fact that my hubby did not wish to share on this occasion, and we were seated at a six table which was empty. There are a couple of smaller tables too. However when we first walked past the restaurant on the Saturday evening, every seat in the house was taken, and it is inevitable that you will be sharing, so this is probably not a place for the introverted.

We elected for the lunch menu, which contained a much reduced selection from the main menu, but at lower costs, with choices starting from 6.95Euro up to 9.95Euro. The lunch time menu also includes a drink, from a choice of Murphy?s or a glass of wine. I am a fussy wine drinker but I found the wine was an excellent choice, and it was a 250ml glass too, so the lunch menu represents good value for money, when compared with the
price of a drink alone in Dublin!

The portion sizes were adequate for lunch and not too over-facing. My hubby went for a roast chicken dish which was absolutely delicious. I opted for sausages and mash which was equally as tasty. And we also had a side order of some delicious Irish Soda bread and butter, just like Mother used to make, delicious?! All in all we felt that the meal and the ambience represented great value for money, despite our visit being during the somewhat quieter lunchtime spell. The service was friendly and efficient and the background music was enjoyable too. Note there is a 12.5% service charge added to the total bill.

Being an avid reviewer, I did manage to scan the whole of the menu despite only ordering from the cheapie lunch time special sheet. Starters from the main menu include several soups as well as fayre such as pate and clonakilty puddings. The corn chowder soup in particular looks attractive. Prices for starters range from 4Euro to 8Euro.

The main menu consists of Coddles and Stews, Boxty, and a steak and grills section. There are also several options for vegetarians including vegetable stews and boxty. There is also a reasonable selection of red and white wines to be enjoyed.

All in all, we enjoyed the experience and the food at Gallagher's Boxty House, and it was unfortunate that we were not able to squeeze in an evening meal when without doubt the atmosphere within the place becomes much livelier!
