[more]The Garden of Remembrance is located on Parnell Square East in Dublin’s Northside district. It is formal in design and dominated by manmade rather than natural features. Principal elements include a cross-shaped pool visible from the entrance and a statue representing the Children of Ire, both of which draw their iconography from Celtic mythology.
In 1916, Parnell Square was the site where several leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held overnight by the British before being imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. In 1966, the 50th anniversary of the rebellion, it became the site of the Garden of Remembrance, which is dedicated to the memory of those who fought and died in the cause of Irish independence.
The enclosed garden is open more or less during standard office hours, and admission is free. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the garden in a spirit of peace, it keeping with its purpose as a place of remembrance.
