The Dubai Le Meridien is set right at the beach and impressive in terms of architecture, set-up, and service.
Maybe the smiles are a little bit too polished to be genuine, and the construction sites next door do not add to the experience, but overall we found the hotel quite good for a city that otherwise did not impress us.

Very nice and big room, tastefully furnished, with a big bath.
There are only three things I would change:
1) The air-conditioning catches you with a mega-draft every time you enter the room and it also blows onto the beds, giving you a cold after maximum three days.
2) The frequent checks and refills on the mini-bar are unnecessary and should definitely not happen when guests are in their room.
3) TV channels... seems to be a frequent problem in Dubai, where you end up watching the formula one with commentators in Arabic. (Who watches TV in Dubai anyway, you are wondering now? Well, people lying sick in bed after their immune system broke down somewhere between the horrid heat and the chilly air-con).

Don't get me wrong, the staff is friendly. As you would expect, but not an ounce more.
If you have ever been to Thailand and showered with genuine friendliness, Dubai will leave you cold (while you are sweating away in the heat).

Transportation is simply taxi.
Night life was a bit of a disappointment as we would have liked to casually watch some of the football championship games (don't even remember if it was World or European Championship), but they had a very strict policy on who could enter the tent for that occasion. We strolled over to the Westin next doors where they also showed the game and served very nice cocktails.
