The Roman Painted House.

The Roman painted house in Dover is a modern equivalent of a hostel and was discovered in 1970 by The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit and was to be of important significance to the history of Roman Britain.
It was a very well preserved Roman House, and had many finds that were in very good condition. It took a total of 22 years to excavate due to its size and a huge undertaking.
There was more than 20,000 fragments of painted walls found inside the building.

There is a total of five rooms and very well preserved walls from 4 - 8 feet high and the finely in situ painted walls are the outstanding feature. There is also a very well preserved Hypocaust that shows graphically the roman central heating system and how efficient it was.

The House was built around 200 AD and over the next century was extensively altered and this was both for civil and military purposes.

There is free parking provided and a café nearby, including a licensed restaurant nearby also.
There is Wheel chair access on the ground floor only and the gift shop is located in the nearby Museum.
