[09/06/2007] Frommers rates the Denver Zoo as "very highly recommended" or two of the three possible stars. Eric notes "more than 750 species of animals (more than 4000 individuals" are at home "in this spacious zoological park". This is home "to the rare deer like okapi". It is also noted as being among the residents at the Denver Zoo are "endangered cheetahs, Komodo dragons and western lowland gorillas". A major new and "most ambitious habitat" known as Predator Ridge is a recreated "African savannah" complete with the two top predators from the African plains specifically "lions and hyenas". Another innovative feature is the artificial termite mounds. These "disperse insects for the banded mongoose". Denver's Zoo has long been known for being "an innovator in recreating realistic habitats" starting back in 1918 when it built Bear Mountain out of "simulated concrete rockwork".
A particularly "kid friendly attraction" is the Conversation Carousel" where the seats are "wood carved renditions of such endangered species as okapi, polar bears Komodo dragons and hippos". While the Hungry Elephant "serves full meals" and picnicking is popular as well. Eric notes that between "2 hours to a whole day" should be allowed for the visit to the Denver Zoo.
