We visited Qutab Minar or sometimes spelt Khuttab Minar on our last day in Delhi. The tower is actually visible from miles around as it is the highest tower in India. The tower was built in the 12th century and in the surrounding area you will find the ruins of Indias first mosque, which is actually quite well maintained. A thing that I noticed here was that with every attraction there was a display board near to it with all the details of when the tower ( or attraction) was built, by whom etc. The Qutab Minar was built by and thought of by Qutub-ud-din-Aibak who began construction in 1193 after his death though his son-in-law and successor, Iltutmish, added the top four stories. The tower is made out of terra-cotta and sandstone and it has verses and scriptures from the Quran on it. As the tower is very tall you have to actually go very far back in order to get the whole tower in the photo frame. The tower is 234 feet high , with 376 steps although when we were visiting there no one was permitted to enter as construction and repair work was taking place. As, with the tower, the surrounding attractions are a lot in the form of ruins because the stone used to make these was sandstone, with time the monuments are collapsing and are unstable. Surprisingly when you are walking around observing the tower the whole place seems very quiet and you feel detached from the hustle and bustle of Delhi. Lots of tourists do come here but it is not at all noisy or overcrowded as there is so much to see. In the blazing Delhi heat you will find many places of shade because there are a lot of trees in the surrounding area of the tower and places to sit down are also available. There are a few rest rooms for public use also. I must admit this is one of the places that was not on my list of must see attractions but having been there and experienced the tower in its full glory I would thouroughly reccommend it to anyone. You will be amazed at the magnificent structure and be unable to comprehend how it was made by the sheer size of it! If your kids are with you when you go to see the tower then they will have a great time because the place is very peaceful and has a lot of sand that they can play around in.
