[more]In 1995 the Indian Government changed the name of Connaught Place to Rajiv Chowk (after the late Rajiv Gandhi) and the outer ring of the Place from Connaught Circus to Indira Chowk (for his late mother, Indira Gandhi). However, despite this, it's still referred to by almost everyone as Connaught Place - or abbreviated to CP. Connaught Place is the beating heart of New Delhi - it's the Picadilly Circus of Edwin Lutyen's British New Delhi and was named after the Duke of Connaught who visited the city in 1921.
Connaught Place is like a giant donut with a park in the centre. The park also has entrances to the Rajiv Chowk Metro station, which is the key station where the three metro lines intersect. The outer and inner faces of the donut are the collonaded shops and offices of Edwardian days which were once the grand shopping centres for rich Indians and European ex-pats. Today the shops, cafes and restaurants are still a major draw and every airline or major business is likely to have an office on CP.
