Exploring the Buddhist Caves at Dambulla

Article
[25.11.2007] The author writes that the entrance to the cave temple is "a gaudy building called the Golden Temple" which is topped by a "monstrous 30m-high Buddah image" and that from there one has to ascend "many flights of stairs" before reaching the caves. The last cave features "elaborate paintings and carved Buddah images" which, the author states, "were even greater than I imagined". Some of the other caves have very "elaborate paintings" and it is noted that "Cave II is the largest and arguably the most spectacular" and features a ceiling which is "covered in brilliant frescoes showing temples, Buddahs, followers praying and a reclining Buddah in nirvana state." The final verdict is that the Royal Rock Temple of Dambulla "was an awe-inspiring sight, one that I could never do justice in words."
