My wife and I arrived in Dalaman airport about 12.30pm early June after a 4hr flight from Newcastle. We exited the plane by the walkways that attach to the doors on the plane, which is much better than being squeezed onto buses and taxied to the arrivals.
The airport is new and air-conditioned which made it very comfortable to walk to the visa booths and then onto passport control. We were the only passengers arriving at this time so queuing was minimal. We did not have to wait long before our luggage arrived on the carousel.
There is a duty free shop here and as we were self catering we took this opportunity to buy a bottle of Greek ouzo and the Greek brandy Metaxa £20 for 2ltrs a very good price.
We were making our own way to our apartment in Dalaman so we needed to get a taxi, as soon as we exited the terminal a man asked us in very good English if we required a taxi, we said we did and he got us a driver and he told him where we wanted to travel to. As most of the taxi drivers spoke little English this man was there to help the travellers and the taxi drivers a good idea as I have struggled in the past when explaining where I needed to go.
On our return to the airport for our journey home you have all your luggage scanned before you enter the airport. Queuing again was minimal and check-in was efficient. Passing through passport control was easy and once through you will find modern shops and duty free. The duty free is cheap for cigarettes and drink but we found perfumes and sweets more than what you would pay in the UK. The shops sell a variety of items from clothes to jewellery I thought everything was over priced and what made it harder to work out was everything was priced in Euros.
Places to eat are located on the upper floor, Kentucky, Pizza, MacDonald's and a few others we had not heard of. We opted for Kentucky about the best option we had 2 sandwich meals and it came to £17 yes that's right £17 and if you want a pint that will cost £4, so I would advice if you think you need something to eat at the airport take a packed lunch.
We were called to our gate about 1 hour before our flight was due to take off, this is due to all the bags you have being scanned again and yourself going through a metal detector. We just sat back for a while and let the queue die down before going up.
Overall our experience of Dalaman airport was very good, it was clean with plenty of facilities, the signage is very clear with plenty of screens around the terminal and security is reasuring with all the checks on luggage even though it can be a little frustrating at times. The only problem is the prices for goods and food, these establishments have to realise they will make more money charging people a reasonable price and then they might start getting customers in to buy things.
Will be returning in September so hopefully it will run as smoothly as this time.
