[more]The name Cusco is derived from the Quechua word "qusqu wanka" which means "rock of the owl".
The town was the capital of the Inca Empire from 1200s to 1532 and according to an Inca legend was built by Sapa Inca Pachacuti.
The Spaniards arrived in the city in 1533 and the buildings constructed after that moment are a mixture of Inca architecture and Spanish influence.
The most interesting places are the cathedral of Santo Domingo, the Plaza de Armas, the Archbishop's Palace, La Merced, and the Company of Jesus' Church.
Because of both its pre-Hispanic and colonial buildings Cusco was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
