After being left underwhelmed with Christiansborg slot palace we decided to explore some more of the castles and palaces in Copenhagen of which there a plenty.
Next on the list was Rosenborg slot castle which took us some time to find as Copenhagen is not big on having signs pointing to where things are. Luckily it is not located too far from the centre and when you get close the casle is quite large so it's pretty hard to miss it.
The building is a beautiful renaissance castle that dates from the 1600's. You need to get tickets to go inside and view the interior which you get from the office in the gae house.
We arrived at 1:45pm and were informed the castle closes at 2:0pm in winter which seems an odd time to be closing but they allowed us the remaining 15 minutes to go in and view the inside. This meant we had to rush and I couldn't fully appreciate the stunning interior propely and there was so many beautiful artifacts that I was disapointed that I didn't get the chance to appreciate them fully.
After being rushed round the interior of the castle we made our way to the small museum that is located inderneath the main castle. Luckily this was opened later so we got to take our time to fully appreciate the items on display.
There was a lot of swords and weaponary but also some gorgeous old items such as ornimental boxes and a lot of amber. What did surprise me was the lack of religious artifacts as most castles I have visited have a lot of these types of objects. I am not religious but I did find it curious as to why they were so lacking in the historic buildings in Copenhagen.
After looking round the small museum we made our way down to view the Danish crown jewels. These were stunning if not really as impressive as the English crown jewels. There was a lot of gold and diamonds as you would expect but also some lovely intricitely carved animal brooches which were eally interesting to see.
The room it is housed in is quite small and it doesn't take very long to see everything but some of the items are really worth seeing so if you have the time then you should definately make sue you visit this area.
Luckily it wasn't busy when we arrived so we were able to see everything without being rushed but I can imagine in summer when it is crowded with tourists then it may not be such an enjoable experience.
Once we finished looking round the museum we went to have a look at the gardens which are the oldest royal gardens in Denmark.
Unfortunately it was snowing during our visit to Copenhagen so there wasn't really a lot to see of the gardens but they were vast and I can imagine they will be beautiful in the summer.
Rosenborg slot was a beautiful example of a European reniassance Castle and the objects it houses are fascinating and I highly recommend going to see hem for yourself. Just don't make the same mistake we did and find out what time it closes so you can have plenty of time to give everything the attention they deserves.
