[more]St Botolph's Priory is one of the oldest Augustinian priories in England. The priory dates back to the late 11th century when it was built out of flint and bricks from the Roman houses of Colchester.
During the time of the dissolution the priory was almost totally destroyed and since 1536 only its church remains. The church itself was severely damaged during the Siege of Colchester in 1648 and has never been repaired. The west front of the church with its Norman ornamentation is still intact and also still existing are several of the very large circular pillars and arches that used to support the building.
Also to be seen are the remnants of a Roman villa which have been discovered and excavated on the site.
St Botolph's Priory is only a short walk away from Colchester's Castle Museum and Park. The train station of the city and its central bus station are both located within 100 metres of the church.
