[more]The Parish church of Coggeshall, St Peter ad Vincula (Saint Peter in chains), as it can be seen today, was built during the beginning of the 15th century. It is believed that it stands on the same grounds as two much older churches, a Norman church and a Saxon church, the later has been mentioned in the Domesday book.
Coggeshall, like so many other villages in the area, became important for its wool trade. The church was a gift from the wool merchants of the village who had come to great wealth, one of them being the Paycocke family whose 15th century Gothic / Tudor style house can also be visited, their memorial brasses in the floor of the chapel are still existing. St Peters is regarded as one of the finest examples for the Perpendicular period in the UK.
During WW2 the church was heavily damaged but re-built to its original plans after the war. Lately an extension has been added to the church to provide a meeting space, kitchen and toilet facilities.
Entrance to the church is free but donations are welcome.
Events such as concerts and festivals are being held regularly. For the timetable of events and services please visit the website.
