[more]This fort was one of those constructed on the line of Hadrian's Wall and today the Hadrian's Wall Path runs through it. It is located at the point where the Wall crossed the North Tyne river and bridge abutments can still be seen. Chesters is considered the best preserved example of a Roman cavalry fort in Britain and was garrisoned by various cavalry units for three centuries.
The layout of the interior of the fort clearly shows barrack blocks, the commander's house and entrance gates. However, the most distinctive remains are of the bath-house, situated between the walls and the river. The heating system, hot and cold rooms, water channels and a remarkable changing room with 7 niches are all preserved.
The site also has a museum of finds from many sites on the Wall, a collection created by John Clayton, who owned the Chesters estate, in the 19th century.
The site is now managed by English Heritage. There is free parking, a shop and a tearoom (privately run) open in the summer only. The site is reasonably accessible, but English Heritage recommends that disabled visitors bring a companion. Opening hours are daily 10am - 6pm from 21 March to 30 September, and to 4pm the rest of the year. Closed 24 - 26 December and 1 January.
