The zoo covers an area of 1,265 acres and provides a home for over 1,600 different animals comprising 170 species. Its origins date back to 1854 and it is recognised as being the largest zoological garden in India.
Small mammals, birds and reptiles can be found in 81 enclosures but there are also larger animals like lions that can be visited by safari.
The zoo derives its name from Aringar Anna who was a Tamil politician. It is open daily (except Tuesdays) and can be visited between 9am and 8pm.
