The Rennes Etap was only the second of the chain that we stayed at and after the squeaky-clean, new and cheerfully functional (if very plastic) one in Bayeux, the Etap Rennes Chantepie was a little bit of a come-down. Still, it did what it says on the tin: just like the other Etaps, the Rennes one provides budget accommodation in roadside motels (often on the outskirts of cities).
Etap Rennes Chantepie is located in the out-of tow commercial/industrial area of warehouses and business to business stores. The hotel is fairly easy to find (in fact most Etaps are one you know which junction you want, there are usually signs all the way), just outside the Rennes ring-road, with several other cheap motels in the vicinity.
It's an older building and a hotel of the older Etap design with severe steel-tubing bunks and the the purple/maroon/yellow colour scheme. I find that this type of accommodation ages quite quickly. Still, there was nothing particularly wrong as such and the staff were friendly enough.
We booked a family room and it was located on the ground floor, very near the entrance: quite convenient if you had a lot of stuff to carry, but also a bit central. We didn't suffer from any noise though, so the location off the main lobby didn't prove to be a problem.
The room was reasonably sized (at least for an Etap room), and the fourth bed was normal sized single rather than a fold-out camp bed we were given in other places (not that it mattered the Younger Child sleeps as well on the floor mat, or actually even without one as on high-end mattresses).
The internet was fast and working fine in our room (free wifi is a standard in all French Etaps but occasionally we found the signal wasn't great in our rooms).
The décor, as I said above, was a bit dated, not just by design but also by execution: the plastic sink had burn marks on it and there was actually a tear in the black-out curtain. The latter was quite annoying, especially as our room had a floor-length window, which was in fact a door that was de-handled at some point in the past. This was potentially uncomfortable as anybody passing could have a full view of the room, so the curtain was important but using it meant no natural light at all as there was no other windows and when it was drawn the torn bit of the backing made it look really tatty. A voile or a net curtain with an extra black out layer would have been much better (or a normal window).
I can't comment on the accessibility of Rennes' centre as we only stop for a night before continuing to our gite the next day.
