The origins of Carlisle Castle can be traced back to William Rufus in 1092 although there were Roman forts in the region as early as the first century AD. It was reinforced with a stone keep by Henry I as a buffer against the Scots and was enlarged by Henry VIII. The Castle was used as a prison for Mary Quen of Scots. The Cathedral in Carlisle is one of the smallest in England. It was founded in 1122 and has been in continual use since. It has several notable features including the fourteenth century stained glass east window, the barrel vaulted painted ceiling and a sixteenth century carved Flemish altarpiece called the Brougham Triptych.
