[more]The Cathedral was built in the 13th century, originally as the parish church of St Michel. Eventually it was incorporated into the fortifications and still resembles a castle in appearance. It became the cathedral in 1801 taking over from the St Nazaire Basilica. Along with the Cité it was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Carcassonne. Built in Languedoc Gothic style it has a comparatively simple exterior - only a rose window decorates the facade - and simple interior with a single nave. The cathedral treasure is particularly rich. Opening hours are listed on the website.
