Compiled for you: The facts!Details Robben Island

Description: Robben Island, approximately 12 km off the Table Bay coast, is steeped in history and has served, amongst other things, as a military base and leper colony. It has also been a penitentiary for many years and was where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated since the nineteen-sixties.

Since 1997 it has become a museum and guided tours, which last about three and a half hours and include a visit to the Maximum Security Prison, are available. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
