The ship, which was also known as HMS Barcross and HMSAS Barcross, was built in the Blyth shipyards and entered her long service in April 1942. The same year she was taken to South Africa where she was renamed the first time in 1943 and retired in 1947 - to re-enter service in 1955 with the name she still carries today. The ship, which is the only one of the original 76 Boom Defence Vessels that still exists, was finally decommissioned in 1986.
Ever since she is moored in Table Bay harbour where she was painted and refurbished. In 1988 the SAS Somerset opened her doors as a museum ship.
The SAS Somerset is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
