[more]Koopmans-de Wet House in Cape Town dates back to the 18th century and is regarded as a fine example of Neo-classicism. Although it isn't known for sure who designed the building, it is often attributed to the French architect Louis Thibault and German sculptor Anton Anreith.
Already in 1914, after extensive refurbishments, the Koopmans-de Wet House opened its doors to the public; it was the first private house in South Africa that became a museum.
Today it is furnished as a lived-in house of the late 18th century, with a remarkable collection of period furniture, paintings, ceramics, glass and silverware. There are also several murals to be seen and the garden of the house is home to one of the oldest vines in South Africa.
During a visit you will be able to explore nine authentically furnished and decorated rooms on the ground floor from where also several outbuildings can be accessed. Another six rooms are situated on the first floor, including the linen room were an original 18th century Cape linen-press can be seen.
