The reviewer of the Mount Nelson Hotel, travel writer Carrie Hampton, started her "experience" there with the "wonderful tradition of Afternoon Tea" and as she comments," it doesn't get much better that Tea at the Nellie" as the hotel is called locally. She said that "famous faces are common" there and wrote of a few that she saw. The lounge, lobby and bar had all had a stylish refurbishment in 2004 and the "mood" was warm creams, taupe and dark blue fabrics" and that they " seem to have found just the right contemporary note", she says, with a "contrast of old and new". As well, she wrote of the history of the hotel, opened in 1899 before going on to describe her room, with it's two TV's, electronic safe , internet connections and enormous bed together with long thick floral curtains in a "classic bedroom". She writes of "champagne and cocktails" in the newly designed Planet bar and the hotel's tradition of only serving "the finest foods". At the Cape Colony restaurant there, she was greeted by the hotel manager and the executive chef, who choose for her a selection from the menu, after eating which she exclaims, "Oh well, there goes my waistline!".Overall, there was an "agreeable mix of visitors and locals" there and she ended with the words " the Mount Nelson, the place to see and be seen!"
