Biodome - Montréal, Canada
I Do Penguin Impressions Because Of This Place (05.06.2008 21:44)
This place is so cool. I've read some reviews online in which folks describe the Biodome as "boring" because they're used to the larger zoos in their cities. There are larger zoos in my region, too, which include lovely things like green polar bears and animals that tear out their fur in the heat. No thank you! At the Biodome you can experience the flora and fauna of four distinct ecosystems. [more...] -
Aux Vivres - Montréal, Canada
Not For Me, But A Neat Place (18.05.2008 22:05)
I get why this place is neat, I really do. I have vegan friends who rant and rave about Aux Vivres, and I'm sure it's all justified. They really have something unique going on that appeals to folks who have a hard time finding good restaurants that suit their lifestyles. The first day I went here I was with a guy that fits that description. It's his favourite restaurant in Montreal. It took [more...] -
The Fairmont Algonquin - St. Andrews, Canada - August, 2007
Where The King Lives (18.05.2008 19:07)
I lived in St. Andrews for about ten years while I was growing up. The Algonquin hotel is the first thing that many people think of when they think of St. Andrews. The big imposing structure on the hill. We had theories of haunted towers. Someone from Quebec who came to speak at our school asked a friend of mine what that impressive building was. He said, "That's where the King lives." I [more...] -
The Boardwalk and Market Square - Saint John, Canada
Buskers, Beer, and Endless Walkways (21.03.2008 20:50)
The Saint John Boardwalk comes to life in the summer months. It is the site of the only Buskers festival in the province, and it is also a popular area for summer games and amusement rides. Local vendors and out-of-province craftspeople set up tables in the Boardwalk areas during certain periods of the summer. Dates for all boardwalk events can be found on their website. The north end of [more...] -
Saint John City Market - Saint John, Canada
I'm So Hungry After Talking About the Saint John City Market (16.03.2008 20:26)
If you're spending any amount of time in uptown Saint John, you need to check out the city market. It's the hub of the city's uptown culture. Buy locally grown produce, get a cup of coffee from Java Moose, rub elbows with the people responsible for keeping the uptown vibrant. When you enter the market via the Charlotte Street entrance you'll immediately notice that the market slopes downhill [more...] -
Imperial Theatre - Théàtre impérial - Saint John, Canada
A Treasured Bit of Saint John History (16.03.2008 15:19)
I've been to many events at the Imerial Theatre, but one stands out in my memory as I sit down to write this review. John Ritter opened for Sarah Harmer in her 2004 tour. At some point during his set, he said, "This is like playing a show in a giant wedding cake." Currently a National Historic Site, the Imperial was designed by an American architect and opened in the fall of 1913. The style [more...] -
Reversing Falls - Saint John, Canada
Making Heads or Tails of the Reversing Falls (15.03.2008 22:24)
The Reversing Falls are one of the most popular attractions in the city of Saint John. Some tourists go nuts for them, others can't see what all the fuss is about. This split in opinion can be seen in many of the reviews found online. I lived in Saint John for many years and I've never been very good at explaining the phenomenon of the Reversing Falls to others. Here goes nothing. The [more...] -
King's Square - Saint John, Canada
A Good Point of Reference for Discovering Uptown Saint John (23.07.2007 16:42)
King's Square is one of the most prominent and historically rich features of the city of Saint John. It is designed so that, if looking at it from above, it clearly resembles a Union Jack. This design was approved by city officials in 1848 in an effort to display city-wide loyalty to the Crown. The bandstand that is featured in the centre of the square -- the King Edward VII Memorial [more...] -
Waverley Inn - Halifax, Canada - April, 2007
Great Rooms, Good Building, Right Downtown. (16.07.2007 19:14)
Lovely inn on Barrington Street in the heart of downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. The room was lovely, period architecture and period furniture. The entrance area was a little dodgy, but they may have fixed that. I guess it felt like the inn was a little run down, but it was nothing that effected the charm and cleanliness of the inn. The breakfast was nothing to write home about, and I would [more...] -
The Chipman Hill Suites - Saint John, Canada - March, 2007
Classically Beautiful, Extremely Economical. (16.07.2007 18:54)
There are a number of Chipman Hill Suites around town; we stayed at one that was located south on Sydney Street. Absolutely beautiful full sized apartment with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a dining room, and a sitting room. Beautiful Victorian architecture and period furniture pieces. Whoever decorated our suite had excellent taste and a wonderful sense of style. This is a [more...]
