[more]The farm consists of a hill of about one hectare that has been landscaped with native plants to convert the place into a miraculous oasis in the middle of the desert. It has two adjacent farmhouses and a “Haymah” (a bedouin tent): the best possible accommodation with all the charm of the village of Agua Amarga, which is in the Conservation Area known as Cabo de Gata. This excellent accommodation offers the quality of service of a hotel along with all the warmth and charm of the best Country Cottage.
There is an open air Jacuzzi, swimming pool in the style of a Roman Bath, solariums, open air showers amongst the vegetation and large, shaded areas to rest, read and relax in. There is also an Arabian Pavilion to relax in: an open air barbecue and picnic area together with a viewing point that looks down to the ocean.
The whole farm has been designed and is run on ecological principles: this includes water treatment, solar power, the heating and hot water, the construction and insulation of the buildings, waste recycling, irrigation and the ecological breakfasts!
CORTIJO CALA EL PLOMO: A farmhouse of 65 m2 decorated in tones of blue inspired by the Moorish-Spanish buildings of Andalucía and Northern Africa and built in the traditional architectural idiom of the Desert of Almeria. Two bedrooms: one with double bed and the other with two singles; both with their own bathroom with shower. A fully equipped kitchen: refrigerator, vitreous-ceramic hob, kitchen sink and all necessary kitchen utensils. Lounge with fireplace, television with satellite dish, DVD player and music-centre. Hot and cold water and central heating, heated by solar panels.
Two covered terraces, one facing East, and the other to the North.
CORTIJO CALA EN MEDIO: A farmhouse of 65 m2 painted with whitewash, as are the Moorish-Spanish houses of Andalusia and North Africa and built in the traditional architectural idiom of the Desert of Almeria. Two bedrooms: one with double bed with arch and canopy, and another with two single beds. Bathroom with shower. A completely equipped kitchen: refrigerator, vitreous-ceramic hob, kitchen sink and all necessary utensils. Lounge with fireplace, television with satellite dish, DVD player and music centre. Hot and cold water and central heating heated by solar panels. Two covered terraces, one facing East and the other to the West.
HAYMAH EL CAID: Inspired by the know-how of the Muslim rulers, and especially made in Morocco, we have added some up to date details to this Bedouin tent to ensure your comfort. The result is a stable construction of 32m2 laid out as one open space that transports you a place in the desert; equipped with a double bed, a bathroom with shower, a small but perfectly equipped kitchen, a small stove that burns ecologically acceptable fuel for the few chilly days during the winter, an efficient system of ventilation for the summer, a covered entrance giving onto the South and a patio at the back giving shelter from the wind. An Arabic setting amongst the olive trees and the palms.
RECREATION AREAS:
Jacuzzi
Installed on one of the terraces on the Western side of the farm, with views of the Rambla (or dry riverbed) of the Cañada Morena, it has complete privacy. With room for four people; low teak benches, hammocks, parasols made from heather and scrub, and an open air shower in a little grotto, surround the Jacuzzi. You can enjoy the best sunsets or a bath by moonlight and star shine, surrounded by bougainvillea and flowers of paradise. Ecologically treated water.
Roman Swimming Pool
Situated on the terrace next to the Jacuzzi, but it just as isolated and just as private, with views of the southern slopes of the Cañada Morena and the same privileged setting of moon and stars, bougainvillea, flowers of paradise and a Chambao alongside for a fine siesta. Crystalline fresh water heated and treated ecologically.
Chambaos
The whole farm is scattered with 'Chambaos' (open air, shaded seating areas) so that you can take it easy in the best Southern manner; next to the Roman pool, amongst the shady carob trees, on the high ground amongst the palm trees or under the parasols. All these have been thoughtfully situated for rest, reading, just chatting or for the quiet contemplation of the landscape, the only sounds those of the goats and horses grazing not so very far away.
Terrao
(Andalusian for 'terrado': roof-terrace or flat roof).
The roofs of the farmhouses of Almería are the same as those of neighbouring Morocco. They are not tiled, and they are flat so that they can be walked on. In Morocco people often take tea on the flat roofs, making themselves comfortable with carpets, cushions, and low tables and so on. In a place like this the full moon has a different flavour.
Arabian Pavilion
A small Arabian Pavilion with indigo walls, the entrance with arches facing the sunset. Easy chairs, cushions, low tables, somewhere to drink green tea, to take a siesta or watch the sunset protected from the wind.
Barbecue and Viewpoint
A barbecue perfectly prepared for eating in the open air; grille, wood store, work surfaces, sink and running water. Next to this there is a round table in the shade and a viewpoint with the best views of La Joya de Cabo de Gata, looking towards the Mediterranean and the Coast of Aguamarga.

ECOLOGICAL FARM:
Recycled water: The faro is irrigated on the economical Drip-System, supplying just the right amount of water to each plant. An on-site Water Purifying Plant recycles wastewater.
Solar energy: Part of the electricity suply, the hot water for the bathrooms, the swimming pool and the under floor heating is supplied by solar energy generated by solar panels situated on some flan roofs and hidden corners of the gardens.
Bio-climatic construction: The farmhouses have been designed and built with the local climate in mind, with its moderate changes from summer to winter. They remain habitable in cold and hot weather, with maximum energy saving. The materials, the insulation systems, the roofs, the positioning, the windows all contribute to achieving the aim of a comfortable environment at any time of year, without the need for artificial air-conditioning systems that are bad for the health and which do not contribute to a sense of well-being.
Roman under floor heating: Bliss! Inherited from the Romans the under floor heating is achieved by a continuous flow of hot water underneath the floor, heating ceramic tiles to a perfect temperature and creating a comfortable warm surrounding.
Bathing water: The water of the Jacuzzi, as well as of the swimming pool is constantly renewed. Only ecological products that are harmless and non-abrasive are used to treat the water, avoiding irritations and the strong smell of chlorine. The sensation: that of swimming in a mountain stream with the warm water of the Mediterranean.
Cleaning products: For the same reason all the products which are used on the premises for the cleaning and hygiene of the apartments have been chosen because they do not contain products which are abrasive, poisonous or contaminating. No synthetic products are used.
Recycled waste: In this remote place we count on the cooperation of our guests, whom we know are aware of the need for recycling. On the farm you will find clearly marked containers and cans, paper and organic material. Putting rubbish in sacks and in the correct containers helps us to save energy and raw materials.
Fair trade products: “La Joya de Cabo de Gata” actively supports ‘fair trade’ and organic as a jeans of internacional cooperation, and also the self-sustainable development of each community. For these reasons you will find a variety of products for sale whose fabrication meets the criteria of care for society and for the environment: proper salaries, the absence of the exploitation of child labour, equality between men and women, respect for the environment and high quality production. These products are on exhibition for sale in the Arab Pavilion. Also, “La Joya de Cabo de Gata” donates part of its annual income to the “Asociación Amigos del Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níjar” which is dedicated to the conservation of the protected area of Cabo de Gata.
Ecological breakfasts: At “La Joya de Cabo de Gata” all the food served for breakfast is strictly ecological. The produce is grown on agricultural principles that are based on respect for the environment and for the well being of animals, and employs only methods that respect the surroundings. Most of the food that is served for our breakfasts comes from the surrounding region.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES:
Gastronomy: To enjoy the gastronomy of the zone, in small restaurants, next to the sea, in small white little villages or in kitchen restaurants of merger.
