The Old Hall in Buxton is described by Frommers as "one of the most historic old inns of Derbyshire". It dates from the 16th century and many famous guests have stayed here. These include "Mary Queen of Scots (who) stayed here on several occasions between 1573 and 1582" and Daniel Defoe. This is "reputed to be the oldest hotel in England" although the author points out that "other hostelries make the same claim". It is located in a position "overlooking the Buxton Opera House". It is said that the Old Hall's "mellowed walls and ancient rooms evoke the past" but despite this" it is modernized inside and has kept up-to-date with the times". The bedrooms here are "comfortably furnished" and "generally spacious" and each has "a well-maintained bathroom with tub and shower". The "Nostalgia buffs" tend to "seek out Queen Mary's Bower in the oldest part of the hotel" which still contains "its original moldings and a four-poster bed". Finally we are told that there is a "stately dining room" which offers an "an excellent table d'hôte menu". This can be enjoyed even if you are not a guest.
This hotel is highly recommended by Frommers as indicated by the authors one star rating.
